This just in from our DC Reporter - Harry Covert

(August 11, 2004) The next time you want to feel sorry for a jailed “swarthy-looking young person of middle eastern descent” charged with terrorist acts, think for a moment about how difficult it is to guard them in American jails.  It’s not duty for the faint of heart.

My case in point is the Alexandria (Virginia) jail where deputies face dangerous duty every moment of every day.  For example, this is the jail where Zacarias Moussaoui is being held.  He’s one of the alleged hijackers involved in the 9/11 attack.

And, he’s a dangerous character even though he’s not been convicted of anything.

On a recent routine inspection of cells, conditions and inmates, an Alexandria officer completed his inspection and attempted to make idle conversation.  He asked Moussaoui what he would do if he, the officer, could release him from jail?

“I’d kill you,” said Moussaoui without hesitation.

Moussaoui’s trial is on hold by the Alexandria U. S. District Court.  Federal prosecutors consider Moussaoui the 20th member of the hijacking team, which I might remind folks, attacked the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon, killing and injuring thousands of people.  --  08/11/04.

Thank you, Harry, Keep ‘em coming.
